“ You thought fake news was bad? Deepfakes are where truth goes to die .” Oscar Schwartz, The Guardian
A failed novelist is reluctantly drawn into the dangerous orbit of a far-right organisation and what begins as a rescue mission quickly spirals into a world of surveillance and shifting loyalties, where the line between truth and fiction is blurred. Shortlisted for the 2025 European Union Prize for Literature, Deepfake speaks directly to a contemporary moment in which narratives are weaponised and reality itself feels increasingly up for negotiation.
Makis Malafekas studied art history and social anthropology. He presented seminars at the Sorbonne on the history of European comics, and worked at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He has written articles for Eleftherotypia’s 9 , Libération, Lifo and others. Translated by Jenny Steel, Deepfake is the third in the series, following De les kouventa and Mesakti .
